Practical Advice for First Time Moms and Dads as You Prepare for Baby
Don't miss this practical advice for first time moms and dads as you prepare for pregnancy, labor and delivery, and bringing the baby home.
Congratulations!
You are having a baby.
Maybe you're not having a baby…yet. You would like to have a baby and are thinking ahead, preparing for what will come. That is perfectly fine.
I always thought getting pregnant would be so simple, but it wasn't for us. When I did get pregnant, I was unprepared. I had given up hope and had no idea what to do when I saw those two lines appear on the pregnancy test. Sure, I had books, but I hadn't read them.
Did I have the right books?
We had just moved to the area. I had so many questions.
How do you find the best labor support team?
What is this I hear about people eating their placentas?
What do I need to know about childbirth?
What do I do if I think I'm in labor and it's not time yet?!
How do I know I'm really in labor?
What do I need to know about the first post-natal poop?!
I had so many questions and very few answers.
Maybe you're in the same boat. Maybe you're scared, nervous, excited, not sure what to expect, or overwhelmed with all the information out there. I'm here to answer any questions you may have, and even the ones you don't have yet.
You are not alone in this. If you have questions that aren't answered, let me know and we can chat!

First Time Moms
As first-time moms and dads, preparing for the arrival of your baby can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming. To help you navigate this exciting time, here are some practical tips:
- Educate yourselves: Take advantage of the resources available to learn about pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn care. Attend prenatal classes, read reputable books, and consult reliable online sources. Understanding the basics will boost your confidence and equip you with essential knowledge.
- Create a support network: Reach out to other parents, join parenting groups, and connect with friends or family members who have experienced parenthood. Having a support network allows you to share experiences, seek advice, and receive emotional support throughout your journey.
- Plan for essentials: Make a checklist of necessary items such as baby clothing (affiliate link), diapers, feeding supplies, and a safe sleeping space. Consider setting up a nursery or designated area for your baby's belongings. Don't forget to install a car seat and prepare a hospital bag for when the time comes.
- Prepare emotionally and mentally: Pregnancy and parenthood come with a range of emotions. Take time for self-care activities that help you relax and prepare mentally. Communicate openly with your partner about your hopes, fears, and expectations. Remember, it's normal to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety during this transformative time.
- Seek prenatal care: Regular prenatal appointments are crucial for monitoring your health and your baby's development. Attend appointments, ask questions, and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance, address your doubts, and provide essential medical support.
- Practice self-care: As you prepare to become parents, it's important to take care of yourselves too. Prioritize rest, eat nutritious meals, engage in gentle exercise, and seek emotional support when needed. Taking care of yourselves will positively impact your ability to care for your baby.
Remember, every parenting journey is unique, and it's okay to seek guidance and adjust your approach as you go. Embrace the journey with an open mind and an open heart, cherishing the precious moments as you prepare to welcome your bundle of joy.
