10 Essentials for the Breastfeeding Mama
When I found out we were pregnant with our daughter after YEARS of infertility, there were several things that I knew I wanted to do for my baby – natural birth, only organic foods, no toys made of plastic or that needed batteries. We took all the classes, even breastfeeding basics, but I wasn't prepared.

I had no idea how hard breastfeeding could be. I thought it came naturally for both mama and baby. I thought as soon as the baby was born, they would latch on and everything would be good to go. But that didn't happen. Not for us. Maybe it was because I needed a blood transfusion. Maybe it was the NICU stay. Maybe breastfeeding isn't as easy as everyone seems to think.
Whatever it was, I had to fight to breastfeed our oldest. Every feeding started and ended in tears – both for me and her. I almost gave up so many times because it was so hard. But we persevered. We saw a lactation consultant that was a lifesaver for us.
The lactation consultant gave me something called a nipple shield that made all the difference. Eventually, we had to wean off of it, but it helped me gain my sanity back. I knew that it was possible for her to nurse, we just had to find our new normal. That and she had to stop being a lazy nurser. Ha!
We were so successful, we even tandem nursed for several months after her brother was born. I never thought that would happen.
What were the keys to our success?
A supportive husband and a caring lactation consultant.
If you are struggling with breastfeeding, I highly suggest visiting with a certified lactation consultant. If you meet with one and it doesn't “click”, find another one. They are that important.
