Easy DIY Clove Mouthwash with Only 2 Ingredients
This clove mouthwash will leave your mouth feeling spicy and clean. Bonus – it’s as easy to make as a cup of hot tea! Clove buds are found in the spice section of your local grocer. They work great in this recipe because of their strong antiseptic properties.
When my oldest was a baby, I started looking at the ingredients in items we bought to use in and on our bodies.
I started making our personal care products like body scrubs, lotion, and deodorant, which was frugal and a better choice for our family.
Next, I tried my hand at bug spray, sunscreen, and lip balm.
The easier, the better.
This simple clove mouthwash is great because it only uses two ingredients you already have in your pantry.
Benefits of Cloves
Cloves have been valued for their medicinal properties for centuries, particularly in traditional medicine. When it comes to oral health, cloves offer several notable benefits.
1. Antimicrobial Properties:
Cloves contain eugenol, a compound with strong antimicrobial properties. Eugenol helps inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth, which can reduce the risk of oral infections and contribute to overall oral hygiene. This can be particularly beneficial in preventing bad breath and maintaining a healthy balance of oral bacteria.
2. Pain Relief:
Cloves are well known for their natural analgesic effects. Eugenol in cloves acts as a numbing agent, providing temporary relief from toothaches and gum pain. Applying clove oil or a clove-based remedy to the affected area can help alleviate discomfort until you can seek professional dental care.
3. Anti-Inflammatory Effects:
The anti-inflammatory properties of cloves can help reduce inflammation in the gums and other oral tissues. This can be beneficial for individuals suffering from gum disease or other inflammatory oral conditions. Reducing inflammation can help improve gum health and promote healing.
4. Antioxidant Benefits:
Cloves are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the tissues in your mouth from oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. This can contribute to overall oral health by reducing the risk of damage to cells and supporting the health of your gums and teeth.
5. Freshens Breath:
Cloves have a strong, pleasant aroma that can help freshen breath. The antimicrobial properties, combined with their natural flavor, make cloves a useful natural remedy for combating bad breath and maintaining a fresh mouth.
Incorporating cloves into your oral care routine, either through clove oil, clove-infused mouth rinses, or other methods, can provide these benefits. However, it's important to use cloves in moderation and consult with a dental professional before using them as a primary treatment for oral health issues.
