Want to make vanilla extract at home? Here are two easy recipes for bourbon vanilla extract!

Seriously. As I was making this, I kept asking myself why it had taken me this long to make my own vanilla extract. Making my own Vanilla Extract has been on my to-do list for four years. FOUR YEARS! Why did it take me so long? I can't wait to use this yummy goodness. I may try it out in 6-8 weeks, but I hear the longer you let it sit, the better. You have got to make this yourself. Think inexpensive Christmas gifts or hostess gifts too. Are you ready for the recipe? Scroll to the bottom if you want the alcohol-free recipe :).

Bourbon Vanilla Extract

Supplies to make Bourbon Vanilla Extract

A Sharp Knife

Vanilla Beans (about 1 for every 1/3 cup of alcohol)

Bourbon (or Vodka, or Rum, or Brandy)

Directions to make Bourbon Vanilla Extract

Slice vanilla beans lengthwise. I pulled the sides open after I cut them to make sure the knife cut through the bean.

Put the vanilla beans in a sterile jar you can seal. I bought mine at IKEA.

You can try to just pour in the alcohol, but I recommend using a funnel. I used bourbon because I typically buy bourbon vanilla extract. Most bourbon is made in KY (where I'm from).

Place it in a cool, dark place for about 6-8 weeks or longer.

  1. I also live in kentucky and I was thinking of using bourbon to make vanilla extract, however the “bourbon vanilla” you buy at the store is not named for the alcohol. It’s the name given to all vanilla beans that come from Madagascar.

    1. It’s so good. I’ll never buy store bought again! If you try it, come back and let me know how you like it. Have a great weekend!!
