If your kids loved the original The Bad Guys, they have probably been counting down the days to the sequel. But before you grab popcorn and load everyone into the minivan, here’s a look at what The Bad Guys 2 delivers, and whether it’s the right fit for your next family movie night.

Spoiler-free and mom-approved. Let’s go.

DreamWorks Animation is hitting its stride, and families are reaping the benefits! With hits like The Bad Guys 2 and fan-favorite franchises still going strong, DreamWorks continues to deliver bold animation, quick wit, and heartfelt stories.

DreamWorks brought one of its most beloved stories to life with the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, giving fans a fresh way to experience Hiccup and Toothless all over again. It’s visually stunning and packed with heart. I felt like I was really on the Isle of Berk!

Unlike some studios, DreamWorks is showing that it knows what families want, and it’s delivering magic on screen.

Is The Bad Guys 2 inappropriate?

This depends on your kids’ ages and sensitivity. My older kids were not impressed by the language or humor.

The movie is rated PG for:

  • Cartoon-style action
  • Mild language
  • Rude humor (yes, there’s more farting—hello again, Mr. Piranha)

There’s nothing graphic or scary, but the story does touch on heavier themes like the justice system, public trust, and redemption.

In one of the beginning scenes, there is language used that is, honestly, not necessary and shocked me. While it went over my 11-year-old's head, my 16, 14, and 13-year-olds mentioned that scene specifically when I asked what they would mention to you about the movie.

Another scene involves the crew being falsely accused and feeling hopeless. While it’s powerful, it may fly over little ones' heads or feel intense for more sensitive kiddos. You know your kid best!

There is a lot of gas passing in this movie, and a few suggestive scenes added in for humor for the adults between Mr. Snake and Doom, A.K.A. Susan.

For most elementary-age kids, though, it’s nothing they haven’t seen in other DreamWorks films. If they handled the first movie, they’ll be fine here.

The Bad Guys 2 Release Date

The release date for Bad Guys 2 in movie theaters is Thursday, August 1st.

What’s The Bad Guys 2 actually about?

After saving the city and turning themselves in, our favorite “bad guys” are out of prison and trying to start fresh. But the world isn’t ready to forgive them.

No one will hire them, trust them, or give them a second chance.

So naturally… they plan one more heist. Sort of. (It’s complicated.)

There’s a new villain: a stylish snow leopard named Kitty Kat who ropes them into a space-bound plot full of twists. That’s right, this movie ends up in outer space! Think Oceans 11 meets Stargate, but with talking animals and yoga jokes.

The Bad Guys 2 Cast

One of the best parts of The Bad Guys 2? The voice cast nails it again, with returning favorites and fresh new talent that make this sequel shine.

Sam Rockwell brings charm and swagger back to Mr. Wolf, the team’s slick leader. Marc Maron returns as Mr. Snake, with his usual dry wit and reluctant heart. Craig Robinson as Mr. Shark keeps the laughs coming with lovable silliness. Anthony Ramos is back as Mr. Piranha, still the wild card with explosive energy. Awkwafina reprises her role as Ms. Tarantula (aka Webs), the team’s tech wizard with a serious attitude. Zazie Beetz returns as Governor Diane Foxington, the fox with a mysterious past and a big heart. Richard Ayoade is back as Professor Rupert Marmalade IV, the fussy guinea pig who might not be as sweet as he looks.

Joining the original crew are three fresh faces who steal the show. Danielle Brooks voices Kitty Kat, a super-savvy snow leopard and the bold leader of the “Bad Girls”—she’s fierce, smart, and not here to play nice. Maria Bakalova brings brains and brawn as Pigtail, a techie wild boar with a Bulgarian twist and a heart for invention. And Natasha Lyonne adds just the right dose of mischief as Doom, a clever raven who’s always one wing-flap ahead of the game.

This cast delivers fast-paced humor and surprising emotional depth; no wonder DreamWorks keeps winning with families!

Is The Bad Guys 2 as good as the first one?

That depends on what you loved about the first film.

If you’re here for slick animation, high-energy scenes, and that lovable crew dynamic, you’ll get more of that. The voice cast is still top-notch, especially Sam Rockwell (Mr. Wolf) and Marc Maron (Mr. Snake). There are solid laughs, a surprising amount of heart, and some genuinely exciting action.

That said, the story tries to juggle too many big ideas—recidivism, public perception, trauma from the past, and then throws in a moon heist. The balance doesn’t always land, especially for parents hoping for a clean moral arc.

Still, the movie has enough charm to keep most kids engaged and parents laughing, even if occasionally confused.
