Five years after Walt Disney announced plans to open a theme park in Florida,  Walt Disney World Resort  opened on October 1, 1971. Here are some surprising facts you probably didn’t know.

While Walt Disney did visit Florida as part of The Florida Project, he passed away 5 years before the project was realized.

Tower of Terror and Expedition Everest are 199-feet while Cinderella Castle is 189 feet tall. Why? Buildings 200-feet or taller are required to flash aviation lights.

With a total area of 27,000 acres, Walt Disney World® Resort is the largest theme park in the world. In comparison, about 51 Disneylands can fit inside Disney World.

To maintain the historical accuracy of the colonial time period, Liberty Square was built without any restrooms. Don't worry, there are plenty of restrooms close by!
