“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19
Two years ago, this month actually, I was in India. I still remember the noises, the smells, the exhaustion (I was pregnant then too), and the beautiful faces. Even though I was only there for two weeks, those precious people left an impression on my heart. There is not a day that goes by that I am not reminded about India. Sometimes it’s a television show, a text from a friend, praying for our friends over there, a movie, my daughter planning her trip overseas or talking about her “sister” in India. I can’t escape it.
My story with India actually begins in January 2003. My husband and I went to attend seminary for their overseas program and at that time they were heading to India. But that’s not where we felt led. So, we didn’t go. Life moved on, we changed courses, and I forgot.
But God had a plan.
I had no idea what God was doing when we said “yes” to go to India in 2011. I haven’t even completely processed that trip. But I will tell you that I left part of my heart there.
And God’s not finished.
The Impact Opportunity I signed up for at Allume was for two ministries…
Yep. Not finished.
Did you know that there are between 10 and 30 million modern-day slaves?
Those numbers are overwhelming.
I know. They made me feel helpless too.
So did this video:
But we can do something. We have to do something. We have to be the voice for those who have no voice because of the situation they find themselves in.
What Can I Do?
1. Pray. Pray that the Lord would protect the least of these. Pray for the men and women who are committing these crimes. They need Jesus too. Pray that God would get ahold of their hearts. They are the gatekeepers.
2. Partner with The Exodus Road. Learn more about the rescue work that The Exodus Road is doing in India and Southeast Asia by following them on Facebook and Twitter. You can also volunteer.
3. Partner with Freeset USA. Freeset provides the “aftercare” to the individuals to help them get on their feet again, empower them, provide them with a job, and childcare while they work. It is amazing work. You can support Freeset and make a difference in the lives of these women by purchasing bags, t-shirts, bracelets from them. Need to have t-shirts printed for an upcoming event or conference? Contact Freeset.
4. Be their voice. Together we can make a difference.
